Catherine MacLean, MD, PhD, is the Value Advisor and Chief Value Medical Officer, Emeritus at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). She is also the principal at Healthcare Value Solutions, which helps organizations and research teams formulate and implement value-based programs. At HSS she led the successful development and execution of strategies to measure, report and improve health care value which were recognized in HSS’ designation as a Value Innovation Hub by the World Economic Forum. She is an internationally recognized expert on healthcare value and quality with a diverse leadership experience including strategic planning, implementation and evaluation of population health, quality and value programs in her current role and previously as an executive at Elevance Health; a principal investigator on numerous academic research projects at UCLA and RAND; and as a director, chair or participant on numerous national boards, committees and panels related to health care value and quality.
Dr. MacLean obtained her MD from Washington University, St. Louis. She completed her training in internal medicine at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and in rheumatology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She obtained her PhD in health services from UCLA’s School of Public Health. She is a professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical School.
